Introduction:
This page is for persons interested in learning other interpretations of how a technique is done. It is used not to criticize or be rate anyone. There are just as many correct ways of applying the same techniques as well as wrong ways. This is just the way I was shown how to do it. It might not work for you but it might work for others. These are techniques shown by other instructors who have taught me through out the years. So if you’re still inclined to debate the validity of a technique or idea because you watched Mr. Dojo Mojo instruct you on a video website; you can argue with some of the past instructors I trained with.
So Let Us Begin:
How do you throw a proper punch?
We use a vertical punch. What is a vertical punch? It’s a punch where the knuckles are vertical. This is for correct alignment of the arms. Many styles use the horizontal punch which requires 2 motions a corkscrewing movement as wells hip torque. We use the vertical punch because it only requires one smooth motion similar to fencing with the foil. How is power developed with vertical punch? With the legs, similar to picking up heavy boxes. But instead of pushing off the ground when lifting a box, we sink or sit into the ground with our legs while punching. This eliminates the hip torque and moving the shoulders forward in order to produce power. We are using our own weight and the weight of the ground to create maximum power, thus, reducing the students chances of telegraphing a punch against an attacker.
These are but little tips to help you get started. It is always good to seek out a qualified instructor who can observe you if you are performing the technique, correctly. Keep in mind, everyone makes mistakes. There’s no shame in having someone look over you.
